Description

The archives of scientific and cultural institutions are largely sponsored by local authorities and state authorities. Some archives are supported by foundations and associations. The archives do not only store documents that document the history of the institute or association. They are also dedicated to the collection, takeover, indexing and provision of documents that are part of the collection and research focus of the respective institution. The Goethe and Schiller Archive of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar is the oldest German literary archive in Thuringia. The archive holds numerous artist's estates, especially from the 18th and 19th centuries, including the estate of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
